Lisbon by night, or lights of Lisbon

This half-day tour allows you to discover Lisbon, capital of Portugal, colonized by many civilizations along the centuries: Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Moors and finally the Portuguese after 1147.

After a short panoramic tour through some historical quarters of Lisbon, we will visit Alfama, Lisbon's oldest quarter. This city is linked with the heroic deeds of the Portuguese maritime exploration, in the 15th and 16th centuries.
This was the Age of Discoveries and the Golden Era of Portugal, transforming Lisbon into the opulent centre of a vast empire. Part of the wealth from these expeditions was used to build magnificent monuments in a unique Portuguese style:
the extravagant Manueline architectural style, best typified in Jerónimos Monastery (closed on Monday).

Some of these monuments can still be seen, especially in the area of Belém. A brief stop at the Belém Tower- world heritage by UNESCO (Torre de Belém), point of departure of some of the Portuguese maritime explorations, such as on the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos), built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the "death" of Prince Henry the Navigator.

But Lisbon has more than just monuments! We will visit also the traditional commerce zones of the city, with their 18th century buildings: the Downtown and the Chiado. In short, our tour includes some of the highlights that Lisbon has to show!

Program:
5 hours "Walking Tour"
Start at the Rossio Square. By request start at the hotel in Lisbon.
We go to the neighborhood of Rossio Square to enter the historic tram to the oldest quarter of Lisbon .
We will get off at the belvedere Portas do Sol.
Walk through de oldest quarter of Lisbon, Alfama.
Then we go through the lower town that is also known as the chessboard of the Marquis of Pombal, the neighborhood was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755 aas well as the Commerce square with the "Triumphal Arch". View to the River Tagus.
On the pedestrian street "Rua Augusta" go back to Rossio Square.
We walk to the place Restauradores the beginning of Avenida da Liberdade. There we admire the "collection" perfect examples of buildings in Art Nouveau, Art Deco ... The Old Hotel Avenida Palace, Hotel Eden Palace Foz or zb. The Hard Rock Cafe.
Ride with the elevator Glória to S. Pedro de Alcântara. One of the most beautiful "Miradouros" of Lisbon. Here you enjoy the view to the lower town, Baixa.

This West Region tour allows you to know the patrimonial “masterpieces” of Portugal. You have as an option to visit Alcobaça or Batalha.

We've decided to include in this tour a visit to Fátima, the religious capital of Portugal, and an essential place of visit for many people. However, if religion doesn't interest you, you can visit both Batalha and Alcobaça instead.

We will start the day with a visit to Óbidos, a magnificent medieval town, which you will explore on foot, with our guide. This town will take you centuries back in time with the old white washed houses completely surrounded by the old castle walls.

After walking in the town centre and maybe climbing up to the ramparts to enjoy the incredible view it will be time to go to Alcobaça (option) to visit the famous12th century monastery. This monastery is not only a beautiful architectural example, but it has also the monuments in memory of King D. Pedro I and D. Inês de Castro (characters of a true romantic Portuguese story from the 14th century, very similar to “Romeu and Juliet”) of magnificent stone handwork.

For the lunch break the fishing village of Nazaré will come as the perfect spot, since the fresh grilled fish and amazing views of the Ocean should be enough to reenergize you.

From Nazaré we will continue to the Monastery of Batalha, (or Alcobaça as an option) the biggest example in Portugal of the late gothic Portuguese style, where we can find a mix of the gothic style with the Manuelino Art – symbol of the Portuguese maritime expansion.

Fátima and its Sanctuary, the site where Our Lady of Fátima appeared in 1917. Since then, millions of pilgrims go there to pay their promises, to pray or just to feel its mystical strength! The Sanctuary Square is so big that it can only be described by numbers: it can receive simultaneously 300.000 visitors and it's twice the size of St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. .

After this last stop of our Tour we will drive back to Lisbon for a relaxed evening.

After reaching the walled city our guide will invite you to visit the enigmatic church of *St. Francis and its *Chapel of the Bones. The tour will continue up the narrow streets of the old town reaching the Giraldo square where the Inquisition once had its headquarters.

You will also have time to explore the millenium old Roman Temple and have a glimpse at the 12th century *cathedral. In the already distant 16th century Évora thrived with culture and tradition in its university as much as it still does today. During a short visit to the century old university courtyard you will understand why was Évora once the second most important city of Portugal.

After such an intensive cultural morning it will be time to enjoy the pleasures of one of the most creative cuisines of Portugal in some of the local "alentejano" restaurants that our guide will help you to choose.
